The East Falls Development Corporation (EFDC) is pleased to announce that it has hired a new Executive Director, Kathleen Hogan. Kathleen is an excellent person for this position. Kathleen recognizes this is an ideal time to work with the East Falls community and business leaders to position East Falls to build from its strength and continue its evolution into one of Philadelphia’s most dynamic and desirable communities. Kathleen knows that continued success of East Falls “is about bringing people together to work for the betterment of our community, it is not about one person’s vision for success, but about our collective vision built on collaboration and collective action.
Kathleen brings varied and extensive experience to the EFDC. She earned a Masters in Public Health from the University of Michigan and has managed community based public health projects in Latin America and Chicago. In addition to health-based endeavors, Kathleen has been an entrepreneur and store owner, having started two retail stores in Chicago. The combination of doing community assessment surveys and managing grants in public health to experiencing the rewards and challenges of building a retail business that focused on serving its community, position Kathleen for the challenges ahead in leading the continued growth and expansion of the East Falls community.
She is looking forward to working closely with the Board of the EFDC and community members in collaboratively setting a vision for the next 10 years that ensures East Falls preserves its urban village community while embracing new businesses and residential development. She plans to embark on a listening tour of East Falls to hear directly from residents and business owners and gather their thoughts, ideas and passions for making East Falls one of the best neighborhoods to live, work and establish a business in Philadelphia. She knows that the Executive Director’s job is to give voice to the mosaic of ideas and harness the creative energy of the community so that the EFDC can build on the wonderful revitalization work that has been carried out by Gina Snyder, the former Executive Director and others since the inception of the EFDC.
Kathleen is married to Michael Malefakis, Associate Vice Dean of Executive Education at Wharton and they have two children. Kathleen is an avid biker and she looks forward to biking to the EFDC’s office every day – weather permitting. On her way to and from work you might find her stopping to ask your thoughts about what EFDC can do to further develop East Falls as one of Philadelphia’s best neighborhoods.
